Axel Alvin Anderson (1869 - 1934)   Grave

Axel Alvin Anderson was born June 26, 1869 in Korpo near Äbo (Turku4) Finland.

When he was 12 years old, he joined the Finnish navy. He immigrated to America in 1895 and became a naturalized citizen on June 15, 1904 in the Eastern District Court of New York. He was in the American navy for over 30 years as a boatswain's mate. Axel was an avid fisherman, duck hunter, carpenter and wood carver. In the navy he was a rigger, and rigged the Constitution when it was recommissioned in 1929 (?). He built a model of the Constitution, which is in the Naval Museum on the Newport Navy Base.

Axel married Mary Agnes Kelly on August, 1904 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church (est. 1872), 11 De Sales Place in Brooklyn, NY 11207. They met at a dance in New York.

Mary Agnes and Axel Alvin Anderson had 5 children: Frederick, John, Andrew, Eileen and Marie. Frederick died as an infant.Eileen died at about three years old in 1916c of meningitis. Agnes' surviving children were: John, born 1908c, died July 12, 1989; Andrew, born 1910c, died ___; and Marie Josephine who was born July 24, 1916 and died Nov. 24, 2003.

According to the New York 1910 Census, Mary Agnes Kelly Anderson, 31, was living in Brooklyn at 213 McDougal Street with sons John 2, Andrew 6 mos, brother Michael (1885-1947) 25. Her brother John (1887-1953) 23, lived next door. He worked in the sugar factory.

Mary Agnes and Axel were living in Brooklyn at 213 McDougal Street until 1908; by 1912 they were at 903 Dean Street5. We know from the 1920 census that sometime before 1920, they moved to Newport, Rhode Island. John and Andrew were born in New York; Marie was born in Newport. They lived first at 675 Thames Street, then moved up the street to 700 Thames. Daughter Marie who was very close to both her parents said that they had a very happy family life when she was growing up.

On December 16, 1934, Axel died in a drowning accident. He was out duck hunting with a friend and the boat overturned. He was unable to remove one of the high boots he was wearing and his friend could not save him. His body washed ashore 3 months later. Axel was buried March 16, 1935 in the Veteran's Section of the Braman Cemetery on Warner Street in Newport. Grave

Mary Agnes died July 20, 1952, about 2 months before her 75th birthday. Mary Agnes is buried in Saint Columba's Cemetery in Middletown, Rhode Island.

Mary Agnes Kelly Anderson, wife of Axel Alvin Anderson, was born May 28, 1877, in Dungarvan, Waterford County, Ireland1.

Mary Agnes was the oldest of a large family. Brothers Mike, Ed and John came to America. In Ireland, were sisters Bridget, Katie, Nano, and brother Joe.

Mary Agnes arrived in New York October 18, 1895, on the ship Germanic on which she embarked at Queenstown, a port not too far from Waterford. Mary Agnes was 18 years old, Irish, and single. She traveled alone in steerage class with one bag. She could read and write. Her occupation was "servant" and she was coming to America for a "Prolonged Sojourn".2

Frederick Anderson, (1906c -08c)

Frederick Anderson was born in New York. I believe he was born around 1906 and died around 1908. I have tried to find information on Frederick. Perhaps one of these Brooklyn death listings is that of baby Frederick. Of the two, I think the first is most likely because, as I remember, Frederick was the first child and he did not die at birth.

Thomas B. Sheekey (1912-1979)   Obituary  Grave

Marie Anderson and Thomas B. Sheekey married Oct 28, 1939.Marie's husband, my father, Thomas Bartholomew Sheekey was born in Newport, Rhode Island on March 15, 1912. The son of James F. and Bridget Mary Ronayne Sheekey, Tom was named after his grandfather, Bartholomew (1826 - 1876), who came to Newport from County Louth Ireland sometime before 1855. Both my father's parents were born in Newport. He was born and grew up across the street from Marie at 3 Lucas Avenue on the corner of Thames Street. At 16, Tom left De La Salle Academy to work on the yachts. He traveled the world on the yachts visiting Tahiti and the Galapagos in the days when only millionaires and seamen saw such exotic places.
See more about Tom and read a few of the letters he wrote to Marie while he was working on the yachts.

In the early years of their marriage, Marie and Tom lived in the Fifth Ward, some of that time with Marie's mother at 700 Thames Street. In 1947, they moved to East Bowery Street near Bellevue Avenue and Memorial Boulevard. Tom and Marie had five children: Eileen (me), Barbara, Thomas M., Mary Ann, and Francis J., who was named after Tom's brother Frank. Tom died in 1979 and Marie. Tom died shortly after retiring on November 17, 1979, of diabetes complications. Marie, died at the Newport Hospital on November 24, 2003 at 87 years old. They are buried with their daughter Barbara in Saint Columba's Cemetery.

Barbara M. Sheekey (1941-2002)

Daughter of Thomas B. and Marie E. Anderson Sheekey

Barbara was born in December 22, 1941.Only 15 months younger than Eileen, Barbara was a very happy and fun loving child. Sadly, because she was autistic and could not remain at home, when she was about six years old, Barbara went to the Joseph H. Ladd School in Exeter Rhode Island, where she lived until 1983/4 when she transferred to a group home in South Kingston. According to the home staff, Barbara was a very happy person and brought much joy to their lives. A week before she died of a heart attack at the age of 60, she was out for dinner with the staff and her fellow residents.

4 Äbo Finland is half Finnish and half Swedish. It is a bi-lingual city and has separate city halls and schools. Its Finnish name is Turku. Axel's birthdate taken from King's County discharge papers. Axel Anderson's Naval Reserve Certificate gives Axel's birthdate as July 4, 1870. See certificates from John Anderson Collection documents.

5 Information about Mary Agnes and Axel's addresses in Brooklyn were obtained from post cards sent to John Anderson by Mae Watts 1911 , cousin John in 1914. The postcards are owned by Mary Agnes and Axel's grandson John Anderson. Information about Axel's birth date was obtained from shipping papers also owned by John Anderson.

According to their daughter Marie, Mary Agnes and Axel's first son was named Frederick and died as a baby in New York. I have tried to find information on Frederick. Perhaps one of these listings is their baby Frederick. Of the two, I think the first is most likely because as I remember, Frederick was the first child and he did not die at birth. The unnamed baby born July 3 who only lived 20 minutes would have been born too close in age to Johnnie.
